Playing Teams West leads the §Q how can declarer

maximize his chances to bring in 9 tricks ?

In "Easier Said than Done” by Prakash Paranjape, the author describes how  Abhay Todankar reasoned that the Diamond King would have to be onside BUT he only needed 9 tricks (and not 10) and therefore could afford a Diamond loser if the suit were breaking 31.

The first thing to do was cut communications between the 2 defenders so he held up until trick three. After winning the Ace he now cashed the Diamond Ace. The suit was not breaking and he still had to lose a trick to East’s Jack. However East was now the safe hand (either the clubs were breaking 44 or East had no more left).

After winning the Spade switch declarer finally had the luxury of finessing the Heart Jack into the safe hand for the overtrick. All declarer had lost were 2 Clubs and a Diamond. Declarer’s tally of tricks was 2 Spades, 3 Hearts, 4 Diamonds and a Club.
